During the GCSE speaking examination (first examination 2026), students are required to read aloud a short text and will be assessed both on their pronunciation and on their communication in a short interaction which will take place after the reading. This resource, Reading aloud in Spanish, is designed to support students as they are introduced to and gain confidence in reading aloud with accurate pronunciation. The resource will be useful to GCSE students, but also to other students, from beginner level upwards, who are starting to develop their reading and pronunciation skills. Castilian Spanish is used in this resource.
The sounds included are those which make Spanish significantly different to English:
a, o, ll, ñ, e, i, u, ce/ci/z, d/-d, qu, b/v, ge/gi/j, r/rr.
The sounds are introduced one by one, and each page of the resource includes only the sound being practised, the sounds from any previous pages, and certain sounds which are more or less the same in Spanish and in English:
C (/k/), CH, F, L, M, N, P, S, T, X
For example, page 2 practises the o / ho sound. The only words to be read aloud contain the o / ho sound, the a / ha sound from page 1, and the consonants listed above.
