Día de Muertos is celebrated on 1st and 2nd November, mainly in Mexico but also in Mexican communities elsewhere and in several other Latin American countries. It is a joyful and colourful celebration of family, memory and community, in which loved ones who have died are remembered and welcomed back.
It has become an increasingly popular topic for language teachers, providing a rich opportunity to explore Spanish-speaking culture and to encourage intercultural understanding. In the UK, the festival is often mistaken for a Mexican version of Halloween, so it is also a chance to challenge that misconception.
Teachers are often looking for resources and ideas to bring Hispanic culture to life in the classroom. This resource pack comprises 24 different resources suitable for learners from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4. As you know your learners best, you will be able to select the activities that are most appropriate for them.
Each resource comprises the activity sheet together with an accompanying page of notes and further ideas for the teacher. The teacher’s notes pages have grey borders, and, where appropriate, also include the answers to the activities.
